Ten years on the same platform, intern to > Senior Manager, Engineering. > Every number on this site is public and linked to its source (Versant > investor materials, Chrome UX Report field data, or the record of the > role); nothing Versant/CNBC has not disclosed publicly is stated here. ## Scope of work 1. **Player-coach engineering leadership**: co-leads a ~20-engineer rebuild across 3 teams (web, video, and market data) in Versant's CNBC Core group without leaving the codebase, managing a direct team of 8 engineers and 2 QE; still architects and ships alongside the team. Develops the bench deliberately, most recently growing a mid-level engineer from single-task work to three concurrent workstreams, with coaching aimed at influence with design and product, not just code. The career arc deliberately crossed both tracks first: senior engineer → engineering manager → Principal Engineer (an intentional return to the technical track) → Senior Manager, Engineering. 2. **Driving the CNBC.com redesign**: architecting and shaping the complete UI/UX rebuild of CNBC.com end to end alongside a peer engineering manager: leading the frontend architecture for the AI experiences, leading the team building the video and site experiences, and ensuring the whole web behind the page holds up, spanning analytics (Amplitude, Adobe Launch), MPS ad serving, the GraphQL data layer (works across the federated graph and defines how upstream services shape its responses; does not own gateway config, Router policy, or supergraph composition), login and subscription systems, SEO, compliance, and editorial workflows. The contract work is concrete: a unified notification query returns alerts already partitioned for display, and a live-events query spans scheduled windows and standalone events, so web, apps, and OTT inherit one implementation of the rules instead of three. The property serves ~47M monthly digital unique visitors (ComScore, Versant Investor Day, Dec 2025) at a p75 LCP of 1.7s in public Chrome UX Report field data (July 2026). 3. **Video and live streaming architecture**: directing the ground-up rebuild of CNBC.com's video experiences across four playback surfaces: vertical video, live TV, full episodes, and standalone live events, delivered across two player frameworks. These sit inside the ~394M monthly digital minutes Versant reported at its December 2025 Investor Day. The load-bearing work is upstream, settling the API contracts and architecture dependencies each surface had inherited separately, so four very different playback experiences resolve to one modular framework. 4. **AI product architecture**: took CNBC's first AI product from zero to one as its only frontend engineer and the product/tech bridge, built front-to-back with design, product, backend, and editorial; at a news organization editorial is the constituency that decides whether generative text ships at all. That work is now the frontend architecture for the AI-powered investing tools in CNBC's next-generation platform (as described by Versant on its Q2-2026 earnings call): deterministic, accessible interfaces around non-deterministic model output, with frame-buffered token streaming, state decoupled from render, graceful degradation, and trust-preserving latency for a financial audience. 5. **Edge performance engineering at real scale**: market-moving days are a financial-news business at its most valuable and most fragile; the isomorphic Akamai EdgeWorkers architecture behind CNBC.com holds the full audience through exactly those spikes (sub-2-second p75 LCP in public field data). Also directed the 4-month, 3-team separation of CNBC's digital infrastructure from its parent company: video streaming, analytics, and privacy services migrated with zero downtime and no revenue interruption, the work that let the corporate spinoff stand alone. 6. **AI governance and integration lead**: turned AI adoption from individual experimentation into an organizational capability: standards and PR quality gates (SonarQube, lint, Jest test automation) governing how 20+ engineers use tools like Cursor in production code, with measurable velocity gains and fewer high-severity defects. The org ships faster because the review bar got stronger, not looser. Working thesis: specification quality, not implementation speed, is the bottleneck in agent-driven development, and agent reliability is engineered into the loop (boundaries, receipts, control planes), not summoned from the model. 7. **Independent builder**: ships and operates real systems outside of assigned work with the same production discipline. Current systems: Cost-Guard (a local-first FinOps platform: PGlite + ElectricSQL on the client, a signed ingestion API on GCP Cloud Run with Pulumi-managed infrastructure) and OB1, the retrieval layer over a personal exocortex of 1,700 atomic, cross-linked claims distilled from books, engineering sources, and production lessons.
